Look at the paths you walk
Remove clutter and cords from walking routes. Secure or remove loose rugs. Check the route between your bed and bathroom, including lighting at night.
Check stairs and the bathroom
Keep steps clear and improve lighting. Discuss secure handrails and properly installed grab bars. A towel rack should not be used as a grab bar.
Put everyday items within reach
Move frequently used items to easy-to-reach shelves so you do not have to climb or stretch awkwardly. Ask for help with tasks that feel unsafe.
Talk about falls and near-falls
Tell your clinician if you have fallen, felt unsteady, or become worried about falling. A home checklist is a starting point, not a substitute for an individual assessment. Ask your therapist about safe mobility and the right use of your assistive device.
